Siu Yu, i'm really glad my previous post has triggered your interest in knowing the original versions of Alfie and Always Something There to Remind Me Thanks to wikipedia, the info of these 2 much covered songs is known with a click of the mouse. Yes, Alfie was recorded by Cilla first (with the 5th beatle George Martin overseeing the recording). Cher covered it and made a top 40 hit in the US chart As for Always Something There , it's a surprise that the original hit version was by a US male singer called Lou Johnson. The UK people who discovered Sandy recommended it to her and made a big hit for her ...

thanks for the little research which even though may not benefit anyone, does help straighten out facts for some of us.

Thanks for the reminder. I've gone through them and found your late 70s article on Joyce Chan and also the Alfie (2004) video on Youku. It's over 30 years now since you last wrote about her. She did come back to host a music show (every sunday night) on Radio HK in late 90s I listened to them almost every week. The music she used for that show is a classical piece and it is quite beautiful. She has such varied and elegant tastes. So in your article ,you mentioned her playing Peggy Lee ... My fav. song of Peggy is The Folks who Live on the Hill. Have you heard the song "Let's Love" written specially for her by Paul McCartney in late 60s? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5pdE0GzuWQ Regarding Alfie, Bacharach said it's his own fav. song. Yes, Dionne's version was so good (much better than the UK cover by Cilla Black) BTW, have you heard the instrumental version done entirely on a harmonica by Stevie Wonder. It has such a different feel and very haunting. And you know what ? Stevie recorded the song under a different name Eivets Rednow (his name spelled backward , haha) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7cd-L6fUiA So much for now. (Next time I would recommend a few of my fav. xmas songs) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My profile: Age: 56 My Music/movie sites: http://myblog.yahoo.com.hk/webbburt777 http://www.youtube.com/webb60s http://www.youtube.com/maybeperhaps777 http://www.youtube.com/webbinthe60s

陳韻文has a very unique husky voice unlike most other dj's. i think burt bacharach wrote《Alfie》to be sung by, if not for cilla black as 《Alfie》is a british film and the theme song should naturally be sung by a british singer. and dionne is regarded as the muse for the bacharach/david team and it is her "duty" to cover most every of their compostions. how about sandy shaw singing 《there's always something there to remind me》?isn't hers the original version and dionne's a cover?

indeed there're many gay guys active in the hk literary scene, some pretty ephemeral, some more wellknown & easily traceable in newspapers & magazines. some are more articulate about the tongzhi situation [bullying, gay teen suicide, discrimination etc], some not quite so....each person has his mode of expression. what's valuable about hk is diversity.
